Hopewell

The Hopewell tradition covers several different groups of people living in the Midwestern United States from 2100 to 1700 BP. The two main groups were the Ohio Hopewell centered in Ohio and the Havana Hopewell centered in Illinois. All the groups shared interregional trade and elaborate ceremonies surrounding burial and sometimes reburial. Hopewell mounds appear to have been used for burials in addition to other types of ceremonies. Agriculture developed through the tradition with maize becoming an important crop by 1800 BP. Wild foods, however, continued to be an important part of their diet.
