Abstract
The founding texts for the Hindu religion, dating 1500-1000 BC, are the four Vedas: the Rigveda, Yajurveda, Samaveda and the Atharvaveda. Believing Hinduism was never a static religion, the author traces a number of associated traditional ritual behaviors in order to better understand its evolution. The early archaeological record from 9000 BC on is also examined, with the majority evidence dating from the Early Indus into the historic period. The use of ritual spaces is also explored—especially sacred places that have been used continuously for thousands of years—along with the reasons for their locations.
