Abstract: Following a concise overview of Moche material culture, this work is a graphics-rich catalog of excavations and artifacts recovered from three early, elite tombs at the Lambayeque Valley site of Sipán, starting with an account of the discovery by looters and archaeological rescue efforts. Full-scale scientific excavations encountered numerous challenges as well as spectacular riches. The authors begin to answer questions about the social roles of the interred individuals through a comparative examination of grave goods with the known corpus of Moche art. They describe what is known about the Sacrifice Ceremony and how it may have changed over time.
