The village of Zawi Chemi lies in a dry steppe zone with few trees. Leroi-Gourhan identifies in the stratigraphy changes in the type and variety of plant vegetation starting with a few varities dominated by Chenopodia to its replacement in a later phase by a greater variety of Composite type plants. She poses the question whether the change was due to climate or by human cultivation techniques.
