Browse Subjects

You can browse the list of the subjects covered in eHRAF by clicking on the Browse SUBJECTS tab in the eHRAF interface.

There are three modes for browsing by subject in eHRAF.

  • A-Z Index contains word pointers or index terms that may help you to find and choose subject categories that best suit your search
  • Major Subjects gives an overview of the subject categories used in eHRAF
  • OCM Code provides a more traditional display of the subject categories from the Outline of Cultural Materials (OCM) in order of the OCM identifiers.

All of the ethnographic and archaeological documents contained within eHRAF World Cultures and eHRAF Archaeology have been indexed at the document and paragraph-level an HRAF anthropologists. Indexing at every paragraph of text is what makes the eHRAF databases ideal for comparative anthropological research and cross-cultural queries.

Browsing eHRAF by subject will help you to get more familiar with the indexing system, which is based on the Outline of Cultural Materials (OCM), a vast thesaurus of indexes and categories. OCM identifiers are typically 3-digits long and there are over 90 major categories containing over 700 sub-categories.
