Abstract
Postgate examines settlement continuities and discontinuities in the archaeological record for the fringe areas of the Diyala and the Ur region, and of the central south Sumer area (southern Iraq) by using the survey data from Adams, Nissen and Wright. The data support a settlement disruption towards the end of the Uruk period. This may mean the rural population concentrated in the cities for a short period of time.
