Abstract
In this volume (the second of four volumes, eHRAF documents nos. 11-18) Ibrahim Rizkana and Jürgen Seeher describe the lithic industries and present the lithic analyses of the artifacts from Maadi, south of Cairo. The artifacts had been stored in magazines on the site and some deterioration of the artifacts (mostly due to loss) and documentation had occurred. The authors used the excavators notes and the artifacts themselves to prepare this report. As only a sample of the artifacts found during excavation were kept, the authors do not do any statistical analyses of the artifacts, but the lithic artifacts are described in detail and then compared to contemporary artifacts from Upper Egypt and Palestine (Gaza, Israel, and the West Bank). The lithic artifacts included those made from lithic material from local sources and from imported material (such as tabular scrapers imported from the Negev or Sinai). The types of artifacts found cover the full range of tools and vessels such as cores, blades, burins, perforators, scrapers, projectile points, sickles, palettes used to grind and mix cosmetics, grinding slabs for grinding grains, grooved stones, maceheads, spindle whorls, ornaments, and stone vessels. This document includes the catalog of the lithic artifacts along with drawings and some photographs of the artifacts.
