Abstract
Faunal remains excavated at Maadi and Wadi Digla in the period of 1930 to 1953 comprise over 7500 vertebrate remains as well as some 700 mollusk specimens. Of the vertebrate finds domesticated animals form 86% of the assemblage. while wild animals amount to a modest 14%From the analysis of the material, both hunting and fishing seemed to be of minor importance in the economy. The presence of Mediterranean and Red Sea mollusk shells at the sites, used as ornaments, indicates the long distance trade of the inhabitants. A total of 14 animals were found buried in the Wadi Digla cemetery. Of these burials, seven, including one of a dog, were found in conjunction with vessels as grave goods.
