Abstract
Hoffman describes the preliminary mapping, surveying, and testing of the region around Hierakonpolis. The 1967 excavations at the town of Kom el Ahmar found a variety of structures that dated to the Old Kingdom and earlier. Only one surface site in the nearby wadi proved to be of Old Kingdom date. The preliminary findings on the Old Kingdom excavation materials is found in Appendix 3. With this dissertation Hoffman hoped to start compiling the culture history and culture ecology of the Hieradonpolis region.
