Abstract
This document provides the best overview for the Protohistoric Egypt file. It discusses Egyptian history and Egypt's impact through trade, conquests, wars, emigration, and other contacts with its neighbors to the south and north from the Old Kingdom through the 17th dynasty (or through the 2nd intermediate period). This includes discussions on Egyptian forts along the Nubian Nile, trade with Punt, contact with peoples in the western and eastern deserts, and various contact and trade with the Mediterranean world. Kemp provides information on divine kingship, the royal family, the central government, the Memphis court cemeteries, Egypt outside of Memphis, and pious foundations (which were a fundamental part of Egyptian society). He provides information on the Hyksos kings who ruled at the same time as some Egyptian kings and presents some of the explanations for the historical changes that occurred during the Old and Middle Kingdoms.
