Otto presents '…archaeological background [data] …setting… the stage in terms of the environmental conditions and cultural manifestations in the Ohio Valley immediately preceding the development of the Hopewell…' (page 9). She describes the environmental setting, Adena subsistence, Adena ceremonialism, Adena relationships with other cultures, and the relationship between Adena and Hopewell.
