Abstract
Hopewell as it is found around Kansas City is very similar to Illinois Hopewell. The indications of this contact include the use of chert from a formation near Big Bend in central Missouri and stylistic parallels in ceramics and stone tools, but a direct migration of people from Illinois may not be the reason for these similarities. Johnson explores these similarites with descriptions and comparisons between Illinois' and Kansas City's settlement system, subsistence and cultigens (stressing the identification of beans at the Renner site needs to be independently verified), artifact distribution within sites, the amount of exotic artifacts, and ceramics and stone tools.
