CHAPTER TWELVE Fort Hill 1964: new data and reflections on Hopewell hilltop enclosures in southern Ohio

By: Prufer, Olaf H..

Abstract
Prufer writes of his excavations at Fort Hill in June 1964. He describes the stratigraphy of the trench through an outer wall of the Fort Hill enclosure. Excavations at other enclosures are described. These enclosures also show more than one construction episode and some similarities in wall construction (earth core with a pavement of flat stones ontop of that). Prufer states, 'I would interpret the hill top enclosures not so much as fortifications… but as refuges in times of trouble similar to the European Fliehburg structures of the Bronze and Iron Ages…' (pages 320).
