Abstract
Church and Ericksen use data from their excavations at the Wade site and from survey data of other sites in the Salt Creek drainage to test some models of Hopewell settlement patterns (Prufer, Pacheco, and Smith). This document also contains an appendix that is Prufer's analysis of Ilif Riddle sites 1 and 2. The Wade site, Ilif site 1, and others in the Salt Creek drainage appear to be seasonal (not year-round) hamlets or farmsteads based on the diversity of the artifacts. These farmsteads are thought to be associated with mound or earthwork complexes nearby and along the major drainages, but there is not yet enough data to support a direct association.
