Anomalous Basketmaker II sites on Cedar Mesa: not so anomalous after all

By: Matson, R. G. (Richard Ghia).

Abstract
Eight anomalous Basketmaker II sites were tested. These sites were considered anomalous because the sites are situated in locations where one might expect to find Archaic sites. The sites were confirmed to date to the Basketmaker II period but some of the material may date to the earlier White Dog Cave phase and not the Grand Gulch phase. The sites enlarge the range of known adaptations and site settings to include floodwater and sand dune farming and sites located in defensive settings. Matson concludes by indicating '[t]he lack of a late Archaic presence on Cedar Mesa ... means that the development of the Cedar Mesa BM II was not a local in situ event.' (page 235).
