Abstract
This work describes and analyzes the data collected during the first phase of the Valley of Oaxaca Settlement Pattern Project - which consisted of the detailed mapping and surface collection of the region's major archaeological site, Monte Albán (p. xxiii). With the achievement of these goals it was hoped that the information obtained would be instrumental in contributing to measurement, inference, and hypothesis testing in the following areas: (1) the establishment of the site's ancient function and nature; (2) determination of changes through time in the extent and density of occupation of the site, and estimation of population based on these data; (3) outline of change through time in the city's internal organization, especially as this contributes to an understanding of changing patterns of political control and social stratification, as well as the city's changing regional role in these areas; and (4) elucidation of the nature of craft production and exchange within the community and its regional economic role (pp. 6-7).
