Abstract
Howell reports on test excavations at the great raised eastern portion of the Dante complex site at El Mirador, Petén, Guatemala. The ruins of El Mirador were only discovered in 1926 and were not formally investigated until1962. The western sector of El Mirador is dominated by the Tigre pyramid (see Hansen 1990, document no. 11). The Dante complex consists of two immense basal platforms (72.000 sq. meters).which support two two-tiered pyramid-temples (the highest rising to 70 meters), several large public plazas, and around 50 large and small structures. All of the major structures appear to be from the Late Preclassic. The overall dimensions of the sire rival any Mayan site of any period. Howell reports on each of 30 test excavations at 12 structures, and on the recovered artifacts.
