Abstract
This study investigates the development of complex society during the Early and Middle Formative periods (1300-500 B.C.) along the Río Naranjo and coastal plain of Chiapas, Mexico and San Marcos, Guatemala. Love discusses the changing settlement patterns of the region during the Ocós, Cuadros, and Jocotal phases of the Early Formative. In addition he discusses the stylistic changes of ceramics from the La Blanca site in Chiapas, Mexico. He concludes that ranking on the household level occurred at least by the Conchas phase.
