By: Willey, Gordon Randolph.

Abstract
In this chapter, Willey tells the story of the development of Mayan civilization in the Pasión Valley, specifically the sites of Altar de Sacrificios and Seibal. He looks at settlement patterns, architecture, art, craft goods, votive caches, trade, and external influences. According to Willey, the Preclassic Period was one of steady population growth, emergence of ceremonial centers, and trade with the highlands. The Protoclassic Period was one of consolidation and centralization.
