Abstract
This chapter is a discussion of the rise of Mayan civilization in the Northwestern Zone along the Usumacinta river and around the Classic city of Palenque. The Middle Preclassic Period was a time of colonization of the riverine environment. The area closer to the coast (Chontalpa) was strongly influenced by the Olmec culture with minor Mayan penetration in the Late Preclassic Period. At the time of this report, the Preclassic record at Palenque was scant, including some Chicanel-horizon pottery with Olmec-style figurine heads. Palenque rose to prominence later in the Middle Classic Period.
