By: Coe, Michael D..

Abstract
Coe writes about the relationship between the Olmec and Mayan cultures. The Olmec was the earliest Mesoamerican civilization, first appearing in 1200 B.C. and vanishing by 400 B.C. Coe examines the cultural traits that were unique to each culture and those that were shared by both of them. Among the latter are the personality cults of leaders, ball games, certain deities such as the Maize and Fire Gods, incense burners, ritual bloodletting, importance of jade, and certain glyphs.
