Abstract
This is the introduction to the anthology, 'Cuello: An Early Maya Community in Belize.' Hammond discusses the geology of the lowlands, early Mayan settlement and subsistence patterns, and political organization. In the last 30 years, researchers have had to accept earlier dates for both the original settlement of the region and for the rise of the state. Research at Cuello took place from1975 to 1980 and again in 1987.
