Abstract
This is the summary and concluding chapter for the book 'Cuello: An Early Maya Community in Belize' (see documents, nos. 41-50.) Although Cuello was a small site and marginal community in the lowland Mayan Preclassic, it does provide a long developmental sequence with which to study the rise of Mayan civilization. Unanswered questions include the origins of Cuello's inhabitants and its social structure. Although the pyramid, Structure 35 and Platform 34, suggests economic power and decision-making concentrated among an elite, there are no apparent elite burials.
