Late Southern California

The Late Southern California people were hunter-gatherers living in the area of Santa Barbara County, California to just south of today's Mexican-American border between the years 3000 to 150 BP (AD 1000 - AD 1850.) During this time period people became more sedentary, especially in the Santa Barbara Channel coastal region. Villages had discrete territories and were generally politically autonomous. Foraging territories appear to have decreased over time, forcing more intensive use of specific resources. There is some evidence late in the period of settlement hierarchy and economic exchange using shell bead currency.
