Abstract
Sulimirski presents an overview of the prehistory of eastern Europe within the former USSR up to the Iron Age. Sulimirski's objective in this document is to present the evolution of prehistoric peoples with all their interruptions by external influences including "expansions, tribal migrations, conquests, and similar events of a political character." (page xix). He includes some of Asia whenever their influence is felt on eastern European peoples. He discusses the Paleolithic, the Mesolithic, and the Neolithic periods. These were not marked for OCM (Outline of Cultural Materials) codes. He also writes about the role of trade within the tradition and with other traditions and with the east European and western Siberian metallurgy. Over 40 different groups are discussed. Sulimirski usually describes the ceramics, ornaments, decorative patterns, the bronze tools and weapons, and the burials for each culture or group. Numerous maps help to orient the reader.
