Abstract
Sulimirski presents the results from fieldwork he conducted before WW II in Eastern Europe. He uses that data to present an overview of the prehistory of Eastern Europe, mostly to the northeast of the Carpathian Mountains in Moldova, Poland, Romania and Ukraine, from the Late Neolithic to the Iron Age. Sulimirski's fieldwork mainly consisted of excavation of numerous barrow-graves with examination of museum collections. The Late Neolithic Age/Early Bronze Age barrow-grave funerary practices were remarkably consistent throughout this area and, as the field work was done before Carbon 14 dating, there are few artifacts to discriminate between the time periods or the various groups or cultures. Differentiation between the various cultures within this area began to appear during the Middle Bronze Age. Sulimirski follows the Late Neolithic Corded Ware and the Globular Amphora traditions as they become the basis for various Bronze Age cultures. He describes the barrow-graves of the Sub-Carpathian culture, and the culture and site of Komarow, and the barrow-graves around Komarow in the most detail. Numerous other groups are discussed as he describes mostly the graves and the various artifacts found within them. Table 21 is Sulimirski's chronological scheme showing the relative position of the main cultures discussed in this document (page 93).
