Abstract
Holl reviews the theories regarding the origins of iron technology in west Africa. Next he provides a systemic paradigm for analyzing the archaeological record, which considers social, economic, technological, and ecological factors. He then gives an overview of west African copper metallurgy sites and early Iron Age sites. He focuses on the mound sites in the Perichadian plain south of Lake Chad, and one site in particular, Mdaga. For other summaries of the literature on the origns and technology of iron industry in west Africa, see documents nos. 7, 8, 15 and 16.
