The Natufian: settlement variability and economic adaptions in the Levant at the end of the Pleistocene

Journal of world prehistory3 (2) • Published In 1989 • Pages: 159-197

By: Byrd, Brian F..

Abstract
Byrd wrote this review 'to examine the relationship or 'goodness of fit' between current interpretations of Natufian settlement and subsistence strategies and the available archaeological data, to suggest alternative hypotheses, and to indicate areas where more research is needed.' (page 160). He also conducted a cluster analysis of the stone tools from 38 Natufian occupation horizons to look for more evidence of subsistence variability. He found differences between forest and coastal sites and steppe and desert sites.
