Abstract
The 'Ubaid style of pottery painting which stesses the use of circular bands in combination with more elaborate patterns and simple shapes has found acceptance as one representing one of the major phases of Mesopotamian prehistory and is …'not restricted to the region of the first discovery [ Tell el-'Ubaid] but can be found also with contemporary groups of pottery from other areas of the ancient Near East' (p. 246). In this article Nissen explores this concept, and describes new pottery technologies that developed toward the end of the 'Ubaid period, one of which involved the use of the 'slow wheel' or 'tournette', a platform or table pivotted on a central peg that led eventually to the development of the pottery wheel.
