Abstract
In this paper Patterson compares archaeological evidence that sheds light on pre-state societies in Peru and Mesopotamia (Iraq)and, simultaneously, considers how such theoretical concerns as concepts of chiefdoms, kin/civil conflicts , temple economies, and trade, are involved in their formation.
