Abstract
In approximately the year 2300 BC, Sargon of Akkade defeated a coalition of Sumerian city-states led by Lugal-zagesi, thereby sucuring for himself complete mastery over southern Babylonia. This event marked the beginning of what is known in history as the Sargonic or the Old Akkadian empire (p. 107). This study looks back in time at what preceded the defeat of Lugal-zagesi (ed. note: during the Uruk and Early Dynastic periods), in a attempt to understand how the Sargonic development came about, and to shed light on various critical aspects of this development. .
