Abstract
This study is a survey of the Norton literature to determine the orgin and extent of the Norton tradition. Workman comments on the relationship of Norton to other traditions, including the Arctic Small Tool, Northern Maritime, North Alaska, Choris, Thule, Ipiulak, and North Pacific. He focusses on the culture of Kachemak Bay in the North Pacific, which includes most of the primary and secondary defining traits of the Norton culture, except for ceramics. However, he concludes that the two cultures are only indirectly related and share similar characteristics based on their similar adaptations. The appendix includes a list of the three basic defining characteristics, and the primary and secondary defining traits of the Norton culture by archaeological site.
