By: Caldwell, Joseph R..

Abstract
Caldwell presents his theory about the 'Hopewellian interaction sphere.' 'Instead, we shall identify the Hopewellian situation as an interaction sphere embracing a number of distinct societies and separate cultures…. The interactions … are in mortuary-religious matters but not, primarily, at least, in other departments of culture.' (page 137). Caldwell points out that there are many different secular regional traditions within what is called Hopewell, that the diagnostic artifacts had different sources, and that it was the religious interaction between these cultures that lead to the floresence of Hopewell.
