Commodities and interaction in the prehistoric Tonto

roosevelt community development study: new perspectives on tonto basin prehistory (15) • Published In 1995 • Pages: 307-342

By: Stark, Miriam T..

Abstract
Stark summarizes 'trends in commodity production and circulation in the RCD Study area. Use of a multicentric model for examining goods provides patterns that are readily comparable to those found in regions located south and north of the RCD area.' (page 340). As Stark remarks 'what makes the Lower Tonto Basin so interesting-and so aggravating-is its material culture variability. Efforts to simplistically pigeonhole its inhabitants as either Hohokam or Mogollon ... are invariably thwarted by the archaeological record....The RCD analyses suggest that the nature of interaction was complex and involved a combination of population movement and exchange.' (page 341).
