Abstract
Interpreting the nature of the cultural transformation that occurred between the Late Formative period and the Classic period in the Phoenix Basin of southern Arizona remains problematic. In 1930s, the Santan phase was proposed for the early part of this transition, but use of this phase has fallen into disfavor. It is argued here that the Santan phase (ca. A.D. 1075-1200) does have an empirical basis. Evidence presented in support of this elusive phase includes changes in settlement, architecture, burial patterns, ideology, and material culture (p. 221).
