Olmec archaeology: a half century of research and its accomplishments

Journal of world prehistory11 • Published In 1997 • Pages: 51-101

By: Grove, David C..

Abstract
The first half of this document is a history of Olmec archaeology, examining and evaluating the development of the debate between 'traditionalists,' mostly working within the Olmec core area, who believe in the primacy of the Olmec in the development of Mesoamerican civilization, and 'nontraditionalists,' mostly working in other areas, who see the Olmec as one among a number of peers in that seminal process. A succinct overview of Olmec culture follows. A comprehensive bibliography also is provided.
