Plant ecology and paleoecology

ancient chalcatzingoAustin • Published In 1987 • Pages: 14-20

By: Bugé , David E..

Abstract
Bugé opens with an inventory of the modern vegetation zones in the highland Río Amatzinac Valley and their relationships to soils and humidity. Modern pollen spectra are then compared to fossil spectra from the Olmec-influenced site of Chalcatzingo dating to the Middle Formative period. Changes in the fossil spectra over time indicate minor climate shifts and considerable local disturbance of the natural habitat by construction accommodating an expanding agricultural population.
