Abstract
In the course of a cultural ecological analysis of modern indigenous agricultural practices in the vicinity of the Olmec-influenced highland site of Chalcatzingo, Bugé provides some details on soils and scheduling relevant to the Formative period. The work concludes with a theory that the rise of sociopolitical complexity during the Formative period was due to the need for specialists to manage the calendar cycle of an increasingly agricultural economy, with ideological and symbolic underpinnings adopted from the Gulf Coast Olmec.
