Abstract
Bone preservation was poor at the Olmec-influenced highland site of Chalcatzingo, resulting in a limited sample (ranging from the Formative through Classic periods). The recovered remains are discussed by phase, with little or no discernable variation through time, perhaps due to the small sample size. Unlike at other Formative period highland sites, but just as at San Lorenzo in the Olmec heartland, domestic dog appears to have been the single most important source of meat. Although bone strontium analysis indicates greater meat consumption among elites, this is not supported by the pattern of faunal remains among residences.
