Abstract
This paper presents a synopsis of the preceramic (Archaic) period in the Valley of Oaxaca, essentially encompassing three historical phases: the Jicaras (5000-4000 BC); Blanca (3300-2800 BC); and Martinez (±2000 BC). Cultural data for the Archaic deal primarily with stone projectile points and tools, and settlement patterns. Much of the document, however, deals with the successive Formative tradition in the region which is outside the chronological period of the Archaic and therefore has not been indexed with OCM (Outline of Cultural Materials) codes.
