Abstract
Burley provides "a synthesis of Tongan culture history for the period 2850-150 BP [2900 BP-200 BP or 900 BC-1800 AD] and report[s] upon the efforts and different approaches that have been applied by archaeologists over the past three-quarters of a century." (page 339). Burley describes four phases: Early Eastern Lapita Ceramic Period (this was not indexed for Outline of Cultural Materials codes), Polynesian Plain Ware Ceramic Period, the aceramic Formative Development Period, and Complex Centralized Chiefdom Period. He has the Early Eastern Lapita Ceramic Period ending at 2700 BP Burley describes the ceramics and possible reasons for their disappearance; settlement patterns and subsistence and how they changed over time; the chiefly tradition, its trappings, and its genealogical/ancestral lists; the political landscape; and Tongan monumental architecture.
