Abstract
The authors assess the premise that all Initial period monumental structures in Peru were huacas or sacred places. Their fieldwork in the Casma Valley on the north coast suggests otherwise and they propose the re-examination of other platform mound complexes for secular functions or associations. For the site of Pampa de las Llamas-Moxeque they find while Moxeque was a religious structure, Huaca A was used for storage and management of surplus goods, and 110 intermediate-size platforms were used for administration. Additional fieldwork at Sechín Alto focused on the Pyramid of the Columns in the Taukachi-Konkan complex, interpreted as a palace or elite residence with rooms for both public and private use.
