By: Shimada, Izumi.

Abstract
Shimada discusses the prehistoric states of Moche and Sicán in the north coast of Peru. Only the data that pertain to the Moche were indexed for OCM (Outline of Cultural Materials) codes. Shimada focuses on describing the horizontal and vertical territory of the Moche with descriptions of what has been found on the islands in southern Peru, such as the Chincha Islands, and the possible colonies in the far north such as at Vicús. Potential land uses for the hypothesized colonies are described. Differences in settlement patterns, ceramics, metallurgy between the valleys are pointed out. He summarizes the settlement plan for the city of Pampa Grande. As the Moche territory seems to have been confined to the coast, Shimada discusses what was known about contact with neighboring highland traditions.
