Abstract
Based on the rich body of iconography, it is clear that warfare played a central role in Moche culture, but artistic depictions alone few clues to the social conditions for militarism. This document provides an exploration of military clothing, armaments, combat, tactics (with the presence of distance weapons showing depictions of hand-to-hand combat were not the only means), and military organization (clear evidence of military ranks is lacking, though they probably existed). It is concluded warfare was not just ritual, but was undertaken for political ends.
