Abstract
Descriptions and analyses of the elite compounds at Chan Chan, as they are known from survey and limited excavation, includes discussion of their chronology, locations within the site, storerooms, and the types of [i]audiencias[/i] and their locations within compounds, and storerooms. A classification of the compounds is developed, based on standing architectural features such as high walls, wells, and the presence of more open space than found in the contrasting SIAR (small irregularly agglutinated rooms). The evidence for a rigid class system is explored, along with the Chimu nobility and their origin myth, and specialized occupations in political leadership and in the manufacture of certain status items.
