Abstract
This document provides a brief overview of 41 archaeological sites in South America, concentrating on those that date between 13,000-10,000 BP (several of the lithic traditions continue into the Holocene). The authors emphasize the diversity of artifacts and economies found at the sites, some of which indicate an Archaic-like diet breadth before the generally recognized Archaic period. They contrast the archaeological record for South America with that for North America, and speculate on ways people first may have colonized the southern continent.
