Southeastern European Late Chalcolithic tradition is found in the Balkan-Carpathian region of Southeastern Europe between 5700 and 4500 BP. The east Balkan area was characterized by small villages and fortified nucleated settlements of tell type with necropoles outside the residential area. The East Carpathian-North Pontic area was characterized by a hierarchy of settlements, the larger ones having central plazas. Inhabitants practiced a mixed subsistence economy and stored grain. The period is marked by the emergence of copper tools and the work of gold prestige items.
