Eastern Early Woodland

The tradition known as Eastern Early Woodland varies somewhat by region, but primarily extends from 3000 to 2100 BP. It is found in the eastern woodlands of southern Canada and in the United States east of the Great Plains to the Atlantic and Gulf Coasts. There is a continuation of most cultural patterns from the Eastern Late Archaic tradition. Thick-walled pottery is manufactured, at least seasonally. Burial mounds may indicate a strong territorial pattern. Some areas begin a reliance on domesticated plants, but they were basically hunter-gatherers with an egalitarian political organization.
