expand_more Description
The Postclassic Maya consisted of a small number of militaristic states occupying lowland Mesoamerica in Honduras, Mexico, Belize, and Guatemala, from approximately 1230 to 480 BP (770-1550 AD.) It followed the Classic Maya tradition and preceded the historic period. Diagnostic architectural features of this tradition included round public buildings, colonnaded halls, shaped ball-courts, and four-stairway temples. Pottery styles varied regionally. The economy was primarily based on agriculture. The society has been characterized as having major social inequalities indicated by the presence of a hereditary elite and slaves.
