Abstract
In this document the authors describe their methodology in doing a surface survey of the Tula urban zone area in an attempt to determine the maximum extent of the zone itself, settlement patterns and changes in settlements through time, estimates of population size and density during Tula's history, and the determination of special use areas within the urban zone. The sampling operation involved both random and transect sampling techniques. The surface collection obtained contained over 330,000 artifacts predominately pottery sherds, obsidian flakes, and blade fragments. Each artifact class was then studied in turn using appropriate typologies, with the analysis constituting the major portion of this study.
